He is well known for his interesting captions on his Instagram profile and recently his saga with Sahara Reporters.
However, he seems to be in a another problem, one that may or may not affect his job as a Senator.
The people of Kogi West, which he represents sent a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) asking for the recall of the senator. This recall is as a result of Senator Melaye’s ‘poor representation’ in the Senate.
A recall referendum is a procedure by which voters can remove an elected official from office through a direct vote before their term has ended and according to the 1999 constitution of Nigeria, half of the registered voters in a constituency willing to recall its senator must sign a petition.
Going by recent reports, this petition has been signed and the required percentage has been met and so, the Commission (INEC) has to go through a process of verification where everyone who signed this petition will verify their signatures.
If 50% are verified, there will be a vote in the constituency with a simple yes or no within 90 days of confirming the signatures. A simple majority in favour of the recall is all that will be required to remove the senator from the Senate.
Senator Melaye, on the other hand, is unfazed about this as he tweeted that it cannot succeed.
